What a wild and wacky week! I’m in Hawaii, where family and friends keep asking me if I watch the new Hawaii 5-0. The only one I saw was the tsunami wave episode. Then I arrive here a day after the real tsunami hit? Dead fish in the Ala Wai canal. Then the late season monster swell arrives! but I’ll get to that;
First I’ll get to the helpful part. The tsunami shut down a Nuclear Reactor which has dumped radioactive waste in the ocean. They act like that’s a good thing. Sometimes it seems like only surfers care if the ocean becomes the world’s biggest cess pool.
The article below came in from one of my supplement suppliers, Nutra West; so of course they are plugging their products. But this is good info. From Dr. Lynn Toohey
“I don’t know about you, but I am not comforted by the assurances that the alert is only a level 4 (a locally contained area, yeah, right) vs a level 5 meltdown where we “really have to worry” about spreading contamination. When I heard reports that the weather had already taken the radiation “out to sea”, they made it sound like that was a good thing. I don’t think so. Radiation has been released, and while that may be downplayed right now as far as the comparison to a full meltdown, there is no reason to avoid being proactive, as that radiation, no matter how many describe it as low, will travel by air and water to the rest of the world.
We are exposed daily to an overwhelming amount of toxic materials in our air and water. I know I’m going to be taking 3 Iodine Rescue a day (50 mg loading dose) for a couple of weeks to offset an additional toxic load of radiation in the air, no matter how small some describe it to be. I’m not an alarmist, and I’m not saying that we are going to die from Japan’s radiation, all I’m saying is that we already deal with a toxic load from our environment, and I want to do what I can to prevent additional toxicity from getting into the system. It’s always a good idea to maximize your detoxification processes so that you can deal with daily assaults to the body, much less an added toxic burden that comes along unexpectedly. Total Liver D-Tox and Total Systemic D-Tox can help keep the liver unburdened so that it has the strength necessary to deal with the unforeseen toxic assaults.
Iodide/iodine is rapidly taken up mostly by the thyroid, and when it is, it blocks the entrance of radioactive iodine from radiation into the thyroid. Breast tissue is another notable organ that can take in iodine. Supplemental iodide is certainly not a cure all for an emergency melt down, however, ingesting the iodide does displace the radioactive iodine, and allows for more of the radioactive iodine to leave by way of the urine. Note that radiation also contains things like cesium, in the case of the Japanese radiation, and iodide does not protect against that. In a full meltdown, iodide is not going to fully protect those who are proximately exposed to the radiation. The FDA approves an adult dose 130 mg of potassium iodide (iodide changes to iodine in the body) after a “Nuclear Radiation Emergency”, which they do not consider this to be, of course. It just gives you an idea that it is a lot of iodide. Iodine Rescue contains 12.5 mg potassium iodide, such that three pills supplies 50 mg, and that is the adult loading dose amount I’m taking, just to get some protection against toxicity. That is also the loading dose for someone who is deficient in iodine, as most people are. I just returned from a seminar this weekend where the presenter is going to take 2 Iodine Rescue from Nutri-West for a while, and stressed that the radiation is most likely already hitting the states and that it makes sense to be proactive when it comes to protection against toxic assault. I always suggest iodine testing from www.Labrix.com, but in this case I would advise people to make a decision on whether to start on the Iodine Rescue now (I still advise testing). Any concerns and contraindications are addressed in the Iodine Rescue Fact Sheet. I know that the question will come up, “How much do I take?” or “What about children?”, etc. The dosage will be determined by you as a professional. To give you an idea of how the dose is titrated in an emergency, nursing mothers take the full adult dose, children take 1/2 (unless they are as big as an adult, and then they take the adult dose), between one month and 2 yrs of age, 1/4 dose, and newborns to one month of age is 1/8 dose, whether they are nursing or not.”
One nice thing is that she gives specific doseage information. I’m not sure if all the seaweed I’ve been eating off my little open coast reef has supplied me with enough iodine or not. LOL!
On a more personal note. That XXL swell provided a day of a lifetime for me. I was just watching a Jack Lalanne video, where he talks about how taking care of your body allows you to go where you want to. Never truer than this week for me.
On a more somber note. As I crossed to Hawaii for the XXL, Sion Milosky crossed the other way, one of Oahu’s hard charging big wave stars drowned riding some of the biggest waves ever at Mavericks. The locals at Mavericks will continue to push for a full jet ski rescue infrastructure without NOAA’s absurd restrictions.
While meeting and talking story with multiple old friends and acquaintances; I knew that Flippy Hoffman had died not so long ago. One of the truly aloha/wonderful old school surfers from WAY back. What I didn’t know is that his final move was jetsking into Monster Waves. Exactly the way he would have wanted to go. He was in his 80′s
Exercise, eat right, live hard, fun and real. When your time is up, it will have been worthwhile.
